Oral Cancer Awareness Month

This April, as we recognize Oral Cancer Awareness Month at the Dental Centers, we're taking a stand to raise awareness about the critical importance of early detection in the fight against oral cancer. Did you know that oral cancer can develop on any tissue in your mouth, including the gums, tongue, and lips? It's a serious threat, with approximately 54,000 new cases expected this year alone. Alarmingly, 43 percent of those diagnosed may not survive beyond five years, and many who do face long-lasting challenges like facial disfigurement or difficulties with eating and speaking.

So how can you protect yourself? Knowing the symptoms is crucial…

• Persistent sores or lesions in your mouth or on your lips that don’t heal.
• Unexplained lumps or masses you can feel.
• White or red patches on your tongue, gums, or inside your cheeks.
• Ongoing pain in your mouth or unexplained bleeding.
• Jaw swelling or numbness in your mouth.

If the cancer has spread, symptoms may worsen to include a sore throat that lingers, difficulty swallowing, or even ear pain.

The good news is that when oral cancer is caught early, the 5-year survival rate significantly improves.
